I’d rather utilized projectized structures in light of the fact that such association bolsters the heading of this undertaking as demonstrated by Meredith, J. R. ; Mantel, Jr. , S. J. (2009) that venture situated association underpins the need of quick react to showcase, new item improvement and the certainty of partners in their comprehension of their jobs , duty and the movement control inside the association. So as to incorporated the Ryoichi representatives into Sturata Inc. rganization two things significant should be conveyed to the group as referenced by A ; C Black (2007)â * first the reason and the targets of the group should be obviously characterized and received by all colleagues. * second capacities assignments and job of every individual should be concurred and clarified to him. Sharing the goals of the organization and explaining the jobs and obligations regarding the new colleagues as an undertaking director will develop trust among you and the group oversees desires and help in correspondences as well. Flexibly tie the executives set up ought to be set up before the finish of Phase A. Change ; Risk Management In quick changing business condition is essential to set up a framework to control all sort of changes that could occur in the undertaking, Baca demonstrated that there are three unique components identified with change the executives first the position level of the task administrator second setting up condition among the venture group to acknowledge and realize how to manage switch third setting up a change control framework includes following the change solicitation and how handle all sort of contentions identified with it.. (Baca, C. 2005). Uncertain clashes can be destructive† as expressed by A. ; C. Dark. So as to determine the contention between Jeff Hoffman and Dr. O’Neal about Ryoichi first not to customize the subject, explain the issue and make the essential examination to discover the underlying driver and afterward make your activity arrangement forward to determine the contention. (A C Black 2007) One of the dangers that associated w ith such venture is pressure therefor venture administrator ought to oversee group worry as expressed in Emerald Insight Staff. (2005) â€Å"A down to earth three-advance procedure for overseeing work environment stress is: 1. Evaluate the working environment for factors that add to hurtful pressure. 2. Execute pressure. Stress the executives measures to lessen work environment 3. Screen the advancement and execute modifications as suitable. (Cal/OSHA, 1998)† PM needs to manage his pressure and his group worry as previously mentioned all together not to let it influence his and theirs presentation which will prompt task unsettling influence. Correspondence plan: In request to deal with the task and the group effectively a correspondence plan ought to be set to facilitate the progression of data among the venture colleagues as demonstrated by A. amp; C. Dark â€Å"in your job as group pioneer it is your duty to get everybody pulling a similar way â€Å"and this can happen when you set a few components like free progression of data, open correspondence, visit criticism, gatherings and working up a listening society. (A C Black 2007) Below is test of interchanges styles and recurrence ought to be util ized all through the task. Stakeholder| Communication style| Frequency| Owners and Sponsor| Progress reports: email| Daily| Support, customer and task team| Product audits meeting| Scheduled | Sponsor, customer and venture team| Questions/answers: email and cell phone| when needed| Sponsor, customer and undertaking team| Progress reports: email| Weekly| Quality arrangement Product should be widely tried in a live stockroom condition before it tends to be turned out to the clients so a very much characterized quality arrangement should be built up it is significant for the organization notoriety not to hand over awful quality item as expressed by Wysocki â€Å"A sound quality administration program with forms set up that screen the work in a venture is a wise speculation. In addition to the fact that it contributes to customer fulfillment, it assists associations with utilizing their assets all the more viably and effectively by decreasing waste and revisions† (Wysocki, 2009 p. 10) Conclusion It is critical to set the correct procedures and get out organization systems so as to help smooth activity of the organization. as such industry are went with proceeds with changes so setting up the executives and change forms is essential to the achievement of the venture. Zen and the Art of Archery - 825 Words

Zen and the Art of Archery (Essay Sample) Content: First and Last Name Professor's Name Religious Studies 21 April 2016 Zen and the Art of Archery The art of Zen has a significant impact on Japanese culture. It is apparent that it has influenced martial arts, paintings, poetry, ceremonies, architecture, decoration, and archeryCITATION Suz70 \p 223 \l 6154 (Suzuki 223). Its origins date back to the time of the Samurai. When Japanese warriors practiced Kung-fu and other types of martial arts, they considered such forms to be external physical strengthsCITATION Suz70 \p 225 \l 6154 (Suzuki 225). Therefore, they concluded that in order to improve their form, they needed inner mental strength. This resulted in the Japanese seeking out other forms of internal martial arts. Eventually, they stumbled upon Taoists monks who practiced internal Kung-fu, which consisted of gaining power from focusing the mind. Hence, internal martial arts. From this, the term "qi" or "prajna" arose, which means breath flowing in through the nose and into the navel area, such circulation of breadth reaches the heart and the top of the head CITATION Luk93 \p 9 \l 6154 (Luk 9). Such breathing exercises proved effective in improving traditional Kung-fu forms, and after the Japanese had been taught by Zen masters in the art of internal Kung-fu, Japanese warriors could attain a state of "no-mindà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , which referred to an individual who was selfless, and full of compassion. Hence, Zen is synonym with harmony, love, selflessness, and consciousnessCITATION Luk93 \p 11 \l 6154 (Luk 11). While Samurai translates to warrior or fighter in Japanese, they tended to travel far and wide in order to attain "Zenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . In many ways, once a Samurai reached a Zen state of mind, he became harmonious with nature, his wisdom was that of a Buddhist monk, and rightly so as many of the teacher of Zen where Buddhist practitioners. In Eugen Herrigel's "Zen in the Art of Archery" written in 1953, the author explains how he found Zen Buddhism through learning archeryCITATION Her53 \p 23 \l 6154 (Herrigel 23). It started as a quest for spirituality in India when he was presented with the opportunity to attend silent meditation sessions in a retreat in Dharamsala. At the time, the city was filled with Tibetan refugees due to the war. While reluctant at first, after a few days of agonizing silence, the author began to realize he had garnered the ability to become aware of his thoughtsCITATION Her53 \p 27 \l 6154 (Herrigel 27). The days in the retreat constituted of deep meditati on, yoga, and reading. Herrigel's reflections speak of becoming aware of his moods, feelings, and desiresCITATION Her53 \p 36 \l 6154 (Herrigel 36). He then approached his friend Soza Komachiya and asked him to introduce him to his former archery teacher Master Kenzo Awa. Henceforth, Herrigel studied the art of Zen through archery for six years, which was the inspiration for his book. Zen archery is referred to as "artless art" in his book. This expression is representative of selflessness and self-awareness which is attained through Zen Buddhism. Although archery is considered a sport, Herrigel was driven by the pursuit of spirituality. Eugene Herrigel explains that his archery training was "a preparatory school for Zenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ CITATION Her53 \p 23 \l 6154 (Herrigel 23). In a traditional sense, he realized that the art of Zen was more of a religious act which permeated all aspects of Japanese society. He perceived each aspect of his training as a preparation which would allow him to ground himself and harness his spirituality. A critical point in the story transpired while learning to aim his bow. Evidently, Zen Buddhism is depicted in Japanese art, decorations, rituals, and way of thinking. One of the most reoccurring themes throughout Japanese culture is the ability to see oneself, or become self-less so to speak. To learn how to become aware of your thoughts and differentiate negative from positive. He goes on to explain how he was taught to "hit himself" with the arrow, rather than hit the targetCITATION Her53 \p 14 \l 6154 (Herrigel 14). This ideology is crucial to connec...

Management and Leadership Essay - 1392 Words

Therefore, leadership and management are more important than ever. Very early in my career I was taught leadership and as I advanced through the ranks I experienced management. There are numerous distinctions between management and leadership. Good managers are sometimes leaders; good leaders are sometimes managers. The distinction is primarily between action and enabling. Examples of leadership include, a relationship, selecting†¦show more content†¦Leadership Leadership is a facet of management. It is just one of the many assets a successful manager must possess. The main aim of a manager is to maximize the output of the organization through administrative implementation. To achieve t his managers must undertake the four functions of management: planning, organization, leading and controlling. In some cases leadership is just one important component of the leading function. Predpall (1994) said, Leaders must let vision, strategies, goals, and values be the guide-post for action and behavior rather than attempting to control others. In some circumstances, leadership is not required. For example, self-motivated groups may not require a single leader and may find leaders dominating. The fact that a leader is not always required proves that leadership is just an asset and is not essential. To create and maintain a healthy organizational culture is a trait of an effective leader. To be an effective leader requires certain skills. I will identify six skills effective leaders have in common. Followership, concern for subordinates, development of others, communication, high standards of performance and loyalty to the organization. Instinsic and Extrinsic Motivation - 870 Words

Definitions Intrinsic Motivation Intrinsically motivated behaviours are behaviours or tasks that are displayed or completed with no apparent reward other than the activity itself (Deci, 1975). Intrinsic motivation is fueled by personal enjoyment, interest or pleasure. In a classroom setting, intrinsic motivation refers to the student completing an activity or displaying a desired behaviour purely for its inherent satisfaction (Ryan and Deci, 2000, as cited in Oudeyer and Kaplan, 2007). Salmon (2007), states that intrinsic motivation enhances enquiry and can lead to high levels of learning. Intrinsically motivated students typically enjoy the challenges of learning new skills or information, are likely to advance their learning with a mastery-approach, thought to develop a greater understanding of their learning and appear more resistant to discouragement in the event of a poor grade (Hoskin and Newstead, 2009, as cited in Murray, n.d). Extrinsic Motivation Extrinsically motivated behaviours are behaviours or tasks that are induced by rewards or punishment, depending on the success or failure of the task (Lin, McKeachie and Kim, 2003). Vallerand (2004) states that when a student is extrinsically motivated they do not engage in activities out of pleasure but rather do so to derive some kind of reward that are external to the activity itself. Motivation Giani and OGuinn (2010) state that motivation consists of the physical, emotional, cognitive and social forces that

Compare the Presentation of the Themes Obsession and...

Compare the presentation of the themes obsession and control found in The Collector, Othello and The Picture of Dorian Gray Shakespeare employs obsession as a thematic device extensively in Othello with many characters exhibiting complexes which come into direct conflict with the fixations of others, highlighting the self-destructive and all-consuming nature of obsession. This is reinforced by the climax of the play, the deaths of Othello, Desdemona and Emilia and Iago’s subsequent arrest and torture. Similarly, Dorian Gray presents various forms of obsession such as lust, infatuation and narcissism which leads, in most cases, to the destruction of the characters who are swiftly overcome by their vices or refusal to recognise the truth.†¦show more content†¦Like a rich man telling a poor man to stop thinking about money,’ and ‘There was always class between us’. This can be seen as a metaphorical representation of the shifting power distribution of the time, the rise of the middle class instigated more opportunities for working and lower class people to gain wealth and power and further blurred the line between the traditional societal divisions. Clegg is representative of the old, caste-bound patriarchy and Miranda is a pioneer of the new, less rigid system. Miranda herself, however, makes reference to her hatred of ‘the new class people with their cars and their money and their tellies and their stupid vulgarities and their stupid crawling imitations of the bourgeoisie.’ and views Clegg as the epitome of ‘the new people’ although it is possible that this view is a result of her idolisation of GP and subsequent adoption of his ideologies and values rather than her own opinion as she also expresses her ‘†¦despair for days afterwards, thinking how much of their rotten, pretentious blood I must have in me’, in reference to her parents, implying that she feels she does not belong to the class she was born into or that she simply wishes to be free of the class-system altogether. Iago’s obsession with Othello in specific is made most evident in his soliloquies

Western Women s Roles And Roles - 1806 Words

Throughout time, western women’s roles have developed into a popular topic within politics that the people often use to gauge the all important morals and values of leaders. However, in the east, women’s roles have remained rather static and assume a slower, or perhaps unmoving, progression towards change. Eastern women are known to be the caretakers of the family and sacrifice their own personal desires for the good of their husband and children. On the other hand, western women are given more freedom and can make decisions for themselves. While these stereotypes may not apply to all women in the west or all women in the east, it is the assumed definition of the roles of western and eastern women. One character who portrays the qualities of an eastern woman is Sita, or the reincarnation of the goddess Lakshmi, from the Ramayana written by Valmiki and translated by R. K. Narayan. The other character who represents a typical western woman is Dido, the Queen of Carthage, from The Aeneid by Virgil. However, Dido does not remain a western woman throughout the story as she quickly adopts several eastern woman qualities. Virgil utilizes Sita’s character to model the qualities of the ideal eastern woman, while Valmiki molds Dido’s character to show the consequences of adopting qualities of the western woman. Both Dido and Sita enter their respective stories as women with high power. Dido is a queen married to King Sychaeus and Sita is born as a reincarnation of the goddessShow MoreRelatedThe Role of Women in Western Europe and Japan845 Words   |  3 PagesWomen in Western Europe and Japan compare and contrast religiously, politically, and economically. This begins as a simple melodytransforming into a complex variation containing a difference in meterthroughout the variations with in an increase in tempo. The composition has avery light and cheerful familiar sound to it and could easily attract theattention of a child. The use of sensory imagery in music, impressionism, isanother form helpful to increase interest and make music enjoyable. ModestPetrovich Mussorgsky composed a piece, Promenade, from pictures of anexhibition solely around an art exhibition. This is a dark and gloomysymphony that represents a marching soldier and paints a vivid picture of anarmy. Another composer using imagery was Aram Kha chaturian, he composed a workcalled Sabre Dance. This is an extremely energetic powerful piece thatpaints a definite picture of a chase and catch situation. This can be found inmany cartoons today which allows a child to relate the classical music to ahumorous situation. The piece is filled with energy and caused my seven year oldbrother to dance and run around the room. He enjoyed this piece the most andsaid it reminded him of a Tom and Jerry cartoon.. A modern classical composer,Steve Reich wrote Different Trains, this is a classic example of sensoryimagery. The sampled soundspaint a colorful picture and make the piece very interesting and unique. Theoriginality yet classical makeup attracts children and adults to imagine movingtrains. Dynamics, softness and loudness in music, is another important part ofmusical composition. Franz Joseph Haydn wrote The Surprise Symphony thatdeveloped a variation in the dynamic level. This piece was written for aspecial after dinner concert. Haydyn knew that many people used this time for anafterdinner nap so he used calm string music to relax and secure his audience. He gave them just enough time to begin to doze and then CRASH! The wholeorchestra would play a chord as loud as possible (Bond 59). This humorousstory and musical piece brings a sense of laughter and a delightful mood to themusic. Children seem to respond the most to the light and humorous feel tomusic. This sets a good example of a soft dynamic level followed by adramatically loud one. This gives a sense a possible dynamic variety in onework. A rondo, musical form in which the first section is repeated several timeswith a different section between each of the repeats (Staton 179), is asignificant form a child should be taught. The Viennese Musical Clock byZoltan Kodaly performs a rondo in a simple yet entertaining way. This piece isanother example of imagery, the sounds of the clock melody produces a picture oflittle figurines dancing around an old fashioned clock. The mood is happy andjoyful, very enjoyable for a child to learn. Narrative is a form of music thattells a story. The N utcracker is a narrative ballet about a little girlsChristmas Eve in a time long ago, and the nutcracker that she receives as apresent (Staton 92). This story begins with an overture, an introductionplayed by the orchestra, by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This introduction sets themood for the story. During the overture guests arrive for a wonderful party atClaras house (Staton 92). Clara receives a wonderful present from Herrdrosselmeyer, a nutcracker in the shape of a soldier. The girls brother andfriends are jealous of this present and grab it, accidentally breaking it. Claragoes to bed but unable to sleep because of her sadness. She goes downstairs tocheck on her precious broken nutcracker to find the soldier come to life andmarch into battle against an army of mice. This scene leads into Marchalso composed by Tchaikovsky. Clara throws her shoe at the mouse king ending thebattle. The soldier turns into a beautiful prince and to thank Clara, he invitesher to the Kingdom of Sweets. D ance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is the resultof this. The prince and Clara sit upon a great throne to watch as dancersperform the Russian Dance, dancing about in tall boots and hats. This isan energetic dance with an extremely fast tempo. The various dances to followare of many other great lands; Arabia and China. The Arabian dance is muchslower and flowing. The Chinese dance is delightful and uplifting. The Danceof the Reed Pipes is a piece played predominantly on three flutes with lightbackground accompaniment of an orchestra. This also contains a repeat of thefirst section but would not be considered a rondo. The instruments in the secondsection change from flutes to horns, giving it a powerful energetic feel. Thefirst flowing flute section is repeated with a strong conclusion from thecymbals. The narration concludes with Waltz of the Flowers. WAR II Essay Example For Students

WAR II Essay War is one of the most tragic things in our world today. It is even sadder that usually it comes around at least once in our lifetime. In the 20th century alone we have already had two huge wars. These wars were call the World Wars simply because they involved most of the big countries of the world. Many people have died in these wars.. especially the second World War. That is my focus for this essay. The leader of Germany at the time of WW2 and the person who most think started WW2 was a man named Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler was born in Austria. By the time that World War 1 started in 1914, he was living in Germany. He served well in the German Army and for that he earned a medal for bravery. At the end of the war Hitler decided to take up politics. By 1921 he was already the founding leader of the Nazi party. Hitler was an incredibly racist man and he had a great hate for Jews. By 1933, Hitler gained political power by winning the election. Soon after he made himself absolute dictator, calling himself the Fuhrer which means Leader. By the end of the 30s he was already sending Jews off too concentration camps to meet a horrible death. I believe that Hitler was one of the greatest causes of World War 2. Although there are many other reasons, he was definitely one of them. Another reason was the Treaty of Versailles. This was the treaty that was signed at the end of World War 1. This treaty outlined the rules that Germany must follow because of their defeat by Britain and France. Many Germans were angered by the treaty, for most of the rules in the treaty were unfair and Germany lost a great amount of wealth. One of the cruelest reasons for the war was Hitlers racist hate for Jews. He would send them off in cattle cars to places called concentration camps were they would be slaughtered by the thousands. World War 2 was huge and involved a lot of countries. There were thousands of battlefronts and warsites. The two main battlefronts were the battle front between Britain and Germany and the battlefront between the Japanese and the Americans. These battlefronts were split up into smaller battlefronts even still. Many lives were lost in the air, on land and in the sea. Some of the most notable battles were: The Battle of Britain, The Battle of Midway and The Battle of the Atlantic. Since the US and Canada were at war with the Japanese, Japanese Canadians were treated very poorly. The government had decided that all or most Japanese Canadians, even if they were born in Canada had either go home or go and live in one of the camps. These camps were made to keep all the Japanese Canadians together in one location. But the fact was that these camps were very dirty and not fair treatment. Also, the government took away all Japanese possessions and without the Japanese knowing, they were auctioned off at a fraction of their original value! This treatment went on for all of World War 2 and Japanese Canadians were not treaty fairly for many years after. Just recently the government of Canada has decided to pay compensation for their losses but most agree that it doesnt even come close to what they lost. One of the greatest outcomes of the war was the great world power shift. For more than a century Great Britain had been the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world. But they used up too many resources in the wars and their status greatly decreased. One person even wrote that it is not Great Britain any more.. .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a , .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .postImageUrl , .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a , .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a:hover , .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a:visited , .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a:active { border:0!important; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a:active , .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ueba1dc47fd43e015bbcdba0446422a0a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Ferdinand Magellan Essay. it is just Britain. People all over the world suffered through this war. Hundreds of thousands of people died. All for the sake of their countries. And you know what? No one actually gained anything from it. The fact is that all of the countries (excluding the US) lost much, much more than what they gained. Britain lost their power, France lost lives and land, Germany lost everything and Japan lost thousands of civilians in their suicidal attacks called Kamikazes. In my opinion the war was a total waste. Although some people will tell you that we fought and gained the peace that we have today and have had for almost fifty years. People fought for 5 years and lost more than 50 billion dollars. Do think it was worth it? Now, maybe if governments use the past as a guide to the future we wont have to fight such a bloody battle ever again. Especially with nuclear weapons so easily obtainable. Bibliography:

How to Write a Successful College Essay

How to Write a Successful College EssayCollege essay is very important. It is the first chance that a student will have to give their point of view in a very critical moment of their lives. You cannot avoid this, as it will be your life story as well. So, if you're wondering how to write an essay that will stand out from the rest, you might want to take a look at some of these tips.Of course, there are many other ways to go about writing a college essay. One way is to go to a college bookstore and look for books on writing. However, you should try to avoid this idea, because college students don't care about books about writing. What they need is the unique experiences they have had that gave them a distinctively separate outlook. In order to make your successful college essay unique, you must include first-hand knowledge. That is how you can do it. This will help you add something that other writers don't know. It will also tell your readers how much you were personally involved in t he writing process. It will also make it more believable because you are going to be putting in all your thoughts and ideas in this type of essay.Your essays should come from you, not from other people's written words. Many people are under the impression that the more other people talk about themselves and what they have done, the better. This is completely untrue. If you really want to make an impact with your essay, you will need to be a true leader in your own voice. It is also a good idea to stay away from using the word 'like.' Everyone understands that you should not copy another writer's work. Instead, you can add your own spin to it, so long as you do not add something that is not in your own opinion.Another thing that is worth mentioning is that you should not stick to one of the most popular ideas. Sure, that would be best, but it is not always the best way to go. Try to add something unique that no one has thought of before. This will make your college essay stand out fro m others in the market.Another thing that should be avoided is using slang words that many students don't even know. In fact, using such words would only put you on the bottom shelf of many people's vocabulary. They will even know that you are not smart enough to use such words. These are just a few things that you can do to ensure that your college essay is perfect. If you follow them, you will find that your essay will be something that will not just tell others what you think but will add to it as well. It is not only a challenge for you to write it, but it is also a challenge for others to read it and gain something new from it.

Anglo-Saxon Gods Essays - Sir, War Gods, Names Of God, Odin

Anglo-Saxon Gods Anglo- Saxon Gods The Anglo-Saxon period was very interesting. Especially the ancient poems and mythology. While looking around, the Gods captured my attention. Three of them to be exact, Woden, Thunor and Tiw. Woden is known as the most important God of warriors, the God of wisdom and the God of war. This one eyed chief of Gods hung himself from a tree for nine days seeking the forbidden and mystical knowledge of the runes. Woden had the role of selecting who of his men was victorious and who was to die. If they were to die, one would be trampled by a horse and driven through with a spear by the rider. Thunor was the son of Woden. He is considered a God of simple physical strength. He worshipped groves and meadows. Thunor did something strange. He carried a short-handled hammer, which he could use as a held or throwing weapon. To praise him, people wore hammer amulets around their necks. The way we were crosses around our necks. The last God I am noticing is Tiw. An older God whose purpose was to battle and to whom human sacrifices were made. He also stood for law and order. An arrow pointing up was Tiw's sure way to say he wanted a successful battle. The God I find most interesting is Woden. Only because he almost sacrificed his on life by hanging from that tree. Plus he was king of the God's. English Essays

Essay on Hume (induction)

Essay on Hume (induction) Essay on Hume (induction) Hume argued that matters of facts are not to be relied upon. What were his reasons? Did Popper provide us with a more reliable method for establishing matters of facts? David Hume argues that matters of facts are not to be relied upon because of they are identified through the inductive reasoning which is an unreliable method unlike deductive reasoning. In this essay I will outline and analyse his arguments and reasoning for concluding this. I will also argue that whilst Popper’s attempt is admirable, he ultimately fails to successfully answer Hume’s challenge because he employs induction during this attempt, thus begging the question and falling into the circularity trap. This does not mean, however, that we are left with no reason to rely on science. Hume’s argument for the radical conclusion that we cannot justify in matters of fact starts with the distinction he makes between matters of fact and relation of ideas as the only two sources of knowledge. Relations of ideas are derived from deductive reasoning and these truths are discoverable via operation of thought alone. Also to deny this knowledge results in contradiction. For example, it does not make sense to say that a basic triangle has more than three sides. Matters of fact are derived from inductive reasoning and these truths are discoverable through experience. Hume deems these truths are open to doubt because matters of fact are not logically certain. Denying a matter of fact will never entail a contradiction because they all depend on the relation between cause and effect and this is not a formal relation (deductive). No effect can be inferred from a cause alone and to deny the effect will never entail a contradiction. For example, water may have drowned a perso n but to deny it will drown next time is not contradictory, whereas to deny the next triangle will have three sides is. Hume reasons that as humans we understand matters of fact through cause and effect. He argues that we make an irrational connection between the two when in fact they are separate events. For example, I assume that a billiard ball that is hit it will hit another ball and that ball will move. Because I’ve experienced this I then assume it will happen every time, however, according to Hume that is just one possible option. But there is no necessity to the effect because there is no necessity to the cause and effect relation. Hume argues that all our general scientific laws are based on the cause and effect relation and assume this relation will hold good into the future. However, he shows that it is unjustified for humans to base future predictions on matters of fact because they rely on an assumption that cannot be justified, namely that nature is uniform (the future will be like the past. For example, if I have only seen white swans; I will infer that therefore all swans must be white because I have only ever seen white swans. However, this clearly unjustified as black swans were later discovered. Hume argues that humans make an illogical assumption and the fallacy of circularity in thinking that because something has happened in the past it will happen again and because matters of facts are derived from this illogical inference they are therefore unreliable. An implication of Hume’s challenge is that science is irrational and dogmatic. Popper presents a reply to Hume by defending science as a rational and non-dogmatic discipline. He does this by drawing a distinction between two kinds of science, Pseudo-science and Real science. Popper develops his demarcation by defending an alternative to the inductive method which he agrees possesses all the characteristics afforded to it by Hume. He instead presents science as employing deductive reasoning (modus tollens) and nurturing a critical attitude. Popper argues that a real scientific theory is one that is not dogmatic (irrational, close-minded, resistant to change and seeking of verification) arguing instead the science is open to

Medical Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Medical Law - Essay Example Moreover, the evaluation of the physicians, with regard to the continuance or otherwise of the patient’s life, is bestowed with primacy. In many instances the courts have agreed with the physicians’ evaluation that it would defeat the best interests of the patient to continue with life prolonging medical measures (Mendelson & Jost, 2003, p. 131). The 1993 case of Airedale NHS v Bland proved to be a landmark case in the area of cessation of artificial feeding and therapy. The court permitted the withdrawal of treatment from persons in a persistent vegetative state (PVS). In this case, the defendant Anthony Bland was in PVS as a result of having been asphyxiated in a stampede. The physicians attending upon him proposed the discontinuation of artificial feeding and antibiotic therapy (Tibballs, 2007, p. 233). Subsequent to undergoing a persistent vegetative state for three years, a court order was procured by the physicians attending upon Bland. This order permitted the me dical authorities to write finis to the indignity and degradation that had become an integral and overwhelming component of this hapless individual’s life. It was the considered opinion of the judges, ruling in this case that the inability of Bland to execute a will had prevented an earlier end to his pain and indignity filled life (Docker, 2000). It was clearly realised by the medical authorities that such cessation of feeding and treatment would result in death by starvation. However, such a course of action would not cause discomfort to the patient. It was also assumed that it would be in the best interests of Bland to legally discontinue the life sustaining treatment and tube feeding. Lord Hoffmann opined that the discontinuation of treatment was not only in the best interests of Bland but was also aimed at stopping the humiliation being undergone by him and to prevent distress to his family members. According to Lord Mustill, Bland had to be allowed to die in the best in terests of the community. He further stated that this decision was in the best interests of the family members of Anthony Bland (Tibballs, 2007, p. 233). While pronouncing judgement in the Bland case, one of the presiding judges stated that the States of the Union in the US, which had enacted laws to permit living wills, there was an explicit exclusion of terminating life by discontinuing nourishment and hydration (Ozimic & Fleming, 2011). It is the duty of a doctor to take into account, the best interests of a patient. However, there is an erroneous presumption that the best interests of the patient can be determined only by reference to the patient’s wishes, prior to his becoming incapacitated. The choice exercised by a patient need not necessarily be in his best interests, on every occasion (Ozimic & Fleming, 2011). In addition, ignoring the wishes of an incompetent person, should not be invariably be deemed to be disrespectful to the patient, and in contravention of his r ights. Although, patient autonomy is of considerable significance, doctors take other factors, such as life and health, and the provision of adequate health care in order to support the health and life of the patient. With respect to an incapacitated individua

Web 2.0 and a Small or Medium-sized Business Essay

Web 2.0 and a Small or Medium-sized Business - Essay Example 19). One of the major and most important advancements of technology is the internet which has significantly changed people’s lives and how they do business. Specifically, internet has facilitated the development of social media and related developments under the banner â€Å"Web 2.0† which has been central to business operations in the recent times. Web 2.0 refers to the concept that uses internet network (World Wide Web) as a platform for sharing information, collaboration, user-centered design, and interoperability among individuals and companies (Lincoln, 2009, p. 11). Web 2.0 platforms give users the opportunity to collaborate as well as interact with one another as creators and users of content that is user-generated. This technology is revolutionary in the sense that it allows collaboration and interaction among users in a virtual community unlike other websites that limit consumers to passive viewing of the contents that have already been created for them (Elliot t, 2004, p. 27). Web 2.0 platforms include social networking sites, web applications, blogs, hosted services, and video sharing sites among others. The fact that social media has grown exponentially over the years means that no business can ignore it, as it is very critical to the success and performance of businesses (Shah, 2010, p. 16). This paper will discuss the potential of social media and related developments under the banner â€Å"Web 2.0† for helping a medium-sized business (Proxar IT Consulting) to communicate with customers and to share knowledge between its staff. Web 2.0 technologies use internet network (World Wide Web) as a platform for sharing information, collaboration, user-centered design, and interoperability among individuals and companies. Several studies have shown that Web 2.0 has a wide range of generic business benefits that emanates from the adoption of developments in web services, software as a service, and interpersonal computing (Nair, 2011, p. 46). The first generic benefit is that Web 2.0 can help a business improve its ranking particularly in the search result and therefore extend its presence onto other sites. This is important to any business in the sense that it builds high quality links to the company and therefore increases the exposure of the business (Chaney, 2009, p. 35). However, for this to be more efficient, the content should be made relevant to staff and existing and potential customers. The second generic benefit is that it helps in the brand management of the business and helps them to protect their reputation. Proactive use of Web 2.0 can remarkably help to build and find relationships with customers, as well as improve relationship between employees (Lincoln, 2009, p. 19). In addition, Web 2.0 is beneficial to businesses because it enhances relationships between the business, its partners, customers, and staff. Through social media, customers, employees, investors, and partners find the platform to inte ract and collaborate (Lee, 2010, p. 114). Another generic business benefit of Web 2.0 is brand awareness; it presents businesses with incredible opportunity to generate content that brands the company in good light and therefore generate brand awareness to the targeted audience (Elliott, 2004, p. 44). Social media has proved to be fundamental in building consistent presence and therefore enhances brand awareness for any business that uses it. More importantly, Web 2.0 technolog
